Tasty Tuesday - Your Choice (Dog Food)

This week with Tasty Tuesday you get to choose ANYTHING to post. Yeah you heard me, ANYTHING!!! Since I talk about my animals so often, and they are like my children I decided to post about what I feed my dogs.

There are so many dog foods out there, and most people know nothing about the ingredients of these foods. When the little woman and I got our Boxer puppy Bo we did lots of research on what dog food to feed him, and I found a great site called Dog Food Analysis, which includes good break down of the quality of ingredients, and an explanation why certain things are bad. Looking at a food like Hill's Science Diet Puppy Growth Small Bites you would think that it's a great quality food because that's what many vets sell, but I would disagree. The first ingredient in this food is Ground Whole Grain Corn, which might be good for tortilla chips, but I don't think dogs would be eating corn in the wild. According to Dog Food Analysis, "Corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems." The next ingredient is a chicken by-product meal which is "meat", but this explanation given by Dog Food Analysis makes me wonder why we would want to feed this to our animals:

It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”

After filtering through all these awful food reviews I found a great brand of food called Blue Buffalo. A Wikipedia article on "The Blue Buffalo Company" gives some great info:

The Blue Buffalo Company is a maker of natural food for dogs....Blue Buffalo also referred to as "Blue" is a family owned company and was created as a result of the owners' Airedale, Blue, contracting cancer. A formula was developed with human grade ingredients such as real chicken, whole grains, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and a blend of nutrients and antioxidants. Blue Buffalo uses ingredients such as whole ground brown rice, whole ground barley, rye, oatmeal, potato flour, tomato pomace, whole carrots, whole sweet potatoes, ground flaxseed, alfalfa, herring oil, sea salt, menhaden fish meal, and barley grass. The company does not use animal by-products, corn, wheat, or soy as do many other holistic or natural food manufacturers.

The little woman and I settled on Blue Buffalo Fish & Sweet Potato, which our dogs enjoy, and it helps reduce the noxious fumes doggy gas.

Let me know what you've chosen to post about for this weeks edition of Tasty Tuesday, and join us next week with a post about fruit.
